Strategic 3-player trick-taking game
3-5-8
Axiom 358 brings the beloved Polish card classic 3-5-8 (also known as Three-Five-Eight or Sergeant Major) to the web. Three players compete over 16 tricks per hand. In each round, roles rotate clockwise: the Dealer aims for 3 tricks, the Third Player for 5, and the Declarer for 8. Choose trump contracts, Starsza (No Trump), or Mlodsza (Misere), take advantage of the kitty, and exchange cards based on scores from previous hands.
Free in the browser, no account needed.
Rules
- The game is played by exactly 3 players with a standard 52-card deck.
- Each hand consists of 16 tricks. Four cards form the kitty (musik).
- Dealer aims for 3 tricks, Third Player for 5 tricks, and Declarer for 8 tricks.
- Six contracts exist: Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, Spades, Starsza (No Trump), and Mlodsza (Misere).
- In Mlodsza (Misere), targets invert: Dealer aims for 8, Third for 5, and Declarer for 3, and players try to take as few tricks as possible.
- Declarer views the revealed kitty, takes it into hand, and discards exactly 4 cards.
- Starting from hand 2 in suit contracts, players with positive scores give cards to negative players, who must return the highest card of the same suit.
- Players must follow suit. If void in the lead suit, Polish rules require playing a trump if held.
- Highest trump wins the trick, or highest card in the led suit if no trumps are played.
- Hand scoring is strictly zero-sum: points equal tricks won minus target (or target minus tricks in Mlodsza).
How to play, step by step
- The Targets 3, 5, and 8. Dealer needs 3 tricks, Third Player needs 5, and Declarer needs 8. Every trick above your target is +1 point, every trick below is -1 point.
- Choosing Contracts. The Declarer chooses from 4 trump suits, Starsza (highest cards win, no trump), or Mlodsza (avoid taking tricks, targets invert).
- Kitty (Musik). The 4 kitty cards are revealed to everyone. The Declarer picks them up and discards 4 cards.
